SUMMARY: The Department of Defense has submitted to OMB for clearance, 
the following proposal for collection of information under the 
provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act.

    Number of Respondents: 200.
    Responses per Respondent: 1.
    Annual Responses: 200.
    Average Burden per Response: 4 hours.
    Annual Burden Hours: 800.
    Needs and Uses: This information collection is part of a joint 
effort between the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the U.S. 
Maritime Administration (MARAD), to maintain a working data set on 
active U.S. Shipyards. The information collected is required by the 
Merchant Marine Act of 1936 as amended and is critical in providing 
both organizations with a comprehensive list of U.S. commercial 
shipyards and their capabilities and capacities. These shipyards play a 
crucial role in national defense, the economy and the U.S. 
transportation infrastructure and as such, are of considerable interest 
to the U.S. Government. The data collected is used to assess the 
capabilities and capacities of U.S. commercial shipyards in the areas 
of ship repair and ship construction. The data is also used to monitor 
employment numbers for labor forecasting for future build projects as 
well as providing information on the ability to raise labor to meet 
national industrial mobilization requirements during times of national 
emergency. The data collected is the main source of information on 
these shipyards and is used to these ends.
