This notice is published as part of the National Park Service's administrative responsibilities under NAGPRA. The determinations in this notice are the sole responsibility of The Wadsworth, and additional information on the determinations in this notice, including the results of consultation, can be found in the summary or related records. Abstract of Information Available

A total of 25 cultural items have been requested for repatriation. The 25 sacred objects/objects of cultural patrimony are 20 baskets, two pairs of moccasins, one pipe, one tobacco pouch, and one knife sheath. A total of 14 baskets (acc #1918.758, 1918.769, 1918.798, 1918.810, 1918.844, 1918.850, 1918.862-.865, 1918.876-.879) were bequeathed to The Wadsworth by Mrs. Constance S. Mead in 1918. They are listed in our records as originating from Northern California, attributed as possibly Hupa, Klamath, Modoc, or Karuk. These baskets are part of a large gift of nearly 200 Native American baskets given by Mrs. Mead. She was an avid traveler and collected baskets from around the world. She tagged each basket with geographical origin but did not provide further information on her ( printed page 61866) purchases. One basket (1918.1067) was donated by the Estate of James B. Cone in 1918. It is listed as originating from Northwest California, attributed as possibly Hupa. One clay pipe with separate wooden handle (1932.202A,B), one tobacco pouch made from deer skin, beads, quills, and tin (1932.204), one knife sheath made from deer skin, beads, tin, and feathers (1932.205), and two pairs of moccasins made from moose hide and beads (1932.210-.211 and 1932.214-.215) were donated by Dwight G. Holbrook in 1932, attributed to Western Tribes. One basket or twined cap (1935.414) was donated by Mrs. Emerson F. Harrington in 1935 and is listed as originating from Northwest California. One basket (1941.750) was donated by Mrs. G. Hillyer Garvin in 1941 and is listed as originating from California. Two baskets (1943.375-.376) were donated by Miss Clara C. Upson in 1942 and are listed as originating from Northwest California. One lidded basket (INV.1997.4A,B) was found in our collection and therefore has no known provenance. It is listed as originating from Northwest California. The Wadsworth has no records indicating the presence of any potentially hazardous substances on the cultural items.

Determinations

The Wadsworth has determined that:

• The 25 sacred objects/objects of cultural patrimony described in this notice are, according to the Native American traditional knowledge of an Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization, specific ceremonial objects needed by a traditional Native American religious leader for present-day adherents to practice traditional Native American religion, and have ongoing historical, traditional, or cultural importance central to the Native American group, including any constituent sub-group (such as a band, clan, lineage, ceremonial society, or other subdivision).
• There is a connection between the cultural items described in this notice and the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria, California.

Requests for Repatriation

Additional, written requests for repatriation of the cultural items in this notice must be sent to the authorized representative identified in this notice under ADDRESSES . Requests for repatriation may be submitted by any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in this notice who shows, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the requestor is a lineal descendant or a culturally affiliated Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization.

Repatriation of the cultural items in this notice to a requestor may occur on or after October 30, 2026. If competing requests for repatriation are received, The Wadsworth must determine the most appropriate requestor prior to repatriation. Requests for joint repatriation of the cultural items are considered a single request and not competing requests. The Wadsworth is responsible for sending a copy of this notice to the Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations identified in this notice and to any other consulting parties.
